This week I am reporting on salmon eggs.
The first stage in the life cycle of salmon is egg. The egg is about the size of a pea. It is soft and orangish-red color. The eggs have 2 black dots that are the eyes.
Habitat: The eggs need to be in cool clean water. They are laid by the female in a redd. Trees along the stream provide shade to keep the water cool and to help stop erosion. The eggs are hidden under rocky gravel to protect them from predators.
Food: Each egg contains an embryo. There is a yolk sack attached to each embryo. The yolk sack holds yolk, wich is the embryo’s food.
Predators and threats: Predators are birds like ducks and fish like trout. Humans also eat salmon eggs.
Interesting fact: Only 3 out of 3,000 salmon eggs survive to be adult salmon. I think salmon eggs are really cool!
